Frequently
Asked Questions
Let
The Indiaman Magazine Search For Your Ancestor's Records in
the UK
Since 1996 we have regularly been asked to undertake research
for people who wanted to uncover their ancestor's records
in the UK.
Whilst people
wanted to learn more about their ancestor's lives in India
and South Asia, they also wanted to know more about the ancestors
who stayed behind in the UK or who returned to the UK after
Indian Independence in 1947.
UK records
understandably cover a broader range of documents and sources
than the records of our ancestors in India or South Asia.
Back in 1996
the massive quantity of UK records were virtually inaccessible
to most people living outside London so any search would have
been too time consuming and very, very expensive. However,
it is now possible to search the UK records in a fraction
of the time and at a fraction of the cost that it was in 1996.
Today, it
is now possible for an experienced researcher to pour over
a wealth of information and trace your ancestor's movements
from the UK all over the British Empire and beyond!
Obtain
Certified Copies
We can also provide you with 'certified copies' of your ancestor's
birth, marriage and death records from the General Register
Office too.
Genealogical Problems Answered
A recent trial search for an ancestor's details in the UK
uncovered a passenger list which provided some fascinating
information on their movements around the globe.
Another search
provided their address details at death, whilst another gave
the location of their grave in Kensal Green Cemetery, London,
even though I already knew they lived in Dover and had died
in Boulogne, France.
I was quickly
able to solve a perplexing puzzle which explained why previous
time consuming searches of cemeteries in and around Dover
and Boulogne had drawn a complete blank. Who would have ever
imagined that a person who lived in Dover and died in France
would actually have been buried in London???
In a short
space of time I was able to locate the grave of an ancestor,
contact the cemetery and I discovered the wording on their
headstone providing further genealogical information to follow
up.
The trial research
that we have undertaken so far has proved to be breathtaking
in the quantity of records that we have uncovered, which is
why we are now offering to undertake UK genealogical research
for clients who do not have the time to do it themselves!
Below is a

Save
Yourself Time And Money
Obviously, all of the records that we search can be searched
in person by anyone. However, our experienced researchers
will save you time and money. Work out how much it will cost
you to travel to London and to stay there for a short weekend
break, plus meals and the congestion charge if you drive there
and then calculate the time and money you will save by letting
us do the hard work for you instead!
Knowledge
Versus Time
If you are able to travel to London and you can spare the
time, you can spend a few hours at the British Library or
at the National Archives happily trawling through the records
looking for your ancestor's details with little success if
you don't know your way around.
Researching
Since 1996
Our experienced researchers have regularly undertaken research
work for clients at the British Library and at the National
Archives since 1996. They know exactly where to look to find
your ancestor's records.
Thanks to the
Internet we are now able to search a wide range of online
sources including some that everyone can use, plus restricted
genealogical websites that require a licence and a monthly
fee to use.
Our experienced
researchers will search a number of different online and offline
sources looking for your UK ancestors records saving you time
and money.
We will provide
you with copies of any records that we are able to find, including
certified copies from the General Register Office.
How
Much Does A Search Cost
As we explained above, The Indiaman Magazine does not charge
an hourly rate, unlike many other genealogical research services.
We don't want any of our clients to ever have to worry about
the cost of the research they order from us mounting up to
be more expensive than they imagined. For that reason, we
charge a single flat fee of £120.00 per ancestor so
you will never have to worry about the cost of your research
increasing beyond your means ever again.
What
Do I Get For My Money
Our UK search service is not like our British India genealogical
research service, where we only search through a small number
of specific records for your ancestor's details.
A UK record
search involves searching through a vast multitude of online
and offline records and we will provide you with copies of
any information that we find. This may also include the names
and details of some of your other family members who were
associated with the ancestor we originally set out to find,
so the information that we find for you is not limited strictly
to the ancestor you asked us to find. So you do receive more
for your money.
