British Regiments in Asia

Numerous British regiments served and fought in India and Southern Asia alongside their East India Company counterparts.

Listed below are the regiments who have featured so far in The Indiaman Magazine.


The Dorset Regiment (Issue 15).
The story of the 39th & 54th Regiments of Foot. The 39th Regiment of Foot were the first British Regiment to serve in India hence their motto "Primus in Indis."

The 54th Regiment of Foot arrived in India in 1822 and served in India until the end of the Second World War.

The York & Lancs' Regiment (Issue 16).
The story of the 65th & 84th Regiments of Foot. The 65th arrived in India in 1800 and remained there for the next 22 years, taking part in several notable campaigns. The regiment served in India until 1914.

The 84th were raised to serve in India in 1759 and were disbanded there in 1763. The third reincarnation of the regiment arrived in India in 1799 and remained in India until 1819. They also saw action in several notable campaigns and served in India until the end of the Second World War.

The Green Howards Regiment (Issue 17).
The story of the 19th Regiment of Foot. The 19th Regiment of Foot were first raised in 1688 as Lutterell's Regiment. In 1751 they became the 19th Regiment of Foot.

The regiment first arrived in India and Ceylon in 1796, taking part in several campaigns. They served in India until the end of the Second World War.

The Essex Regiment (Issue 18).
The story of the 44th & 56th Regiments of Foot. The 44th first served in India in 1822, and in 1841 during the First Afghan War, the entire column moving from Kabul to Jellalabad was massacred in the deep snow at Gundamak. The 56th arrived in India in 1805 and was amalgamated with the 44th Regiment of Foot in 1881 to become the Essex Regiment.

The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry Regiment (Issue 19).
The story of the 32nd & 46th Regiments of Foot. The 32nd Regiment served with distinction during the Indian Mutiny and was awarded the Battle Honor"Defence of Lucknow." The 46th first arrived in India in 1817.

The King's Shropshire Light Infantry Regiment (Issue 20).
The story of the 53rd Regiment of Foot in the First Sikh War (1845-46). The 53rd Regiment served with distinction during the Sikh War and was took part in the battles of Aliwal and Sobraon.

The BLACK WATCH (Issue 21).
The story of the 42nd and 73rd Regiment of Foot.

The 19th Lancers (Issue 23).
The story of the 23rd and 19th Light Dragoons, which became the 19th Lancers.

Regimental Museum:
The regiment was disbanded in 1821 after 40 years of almost constant service.


The King's Royal rifle corps (Issue 24).
The story of the 60th Regiment of Foot.
