The British
Ancestors in India Society
The Indiaman Magazine and the British Ancestors
in India Society were both founded in 1995 by Paul Rowland.
The magazine was originally the journal of the Society and
was immediately well received as being a ground breaking genealogical
magazine.
"I received my 'Indiaman' this morning
and felt I must write to you straightaway to congratulate
you on an excellent first issue. It is not only nicely produced
but also full of very interesting articles and valuable information.
I don't think, in 21 years association with the Federation
of Family History Societies as either Chairman or President,
that I can remember any society who produced such a good first
issue..."
Colonel Iain Swinnerton, Federation of Family
History Societies.
The Indiaman
Magazine
Interest in the magazine and the Society
grew at a phenomenal rate with professional researchers, academic
bodies and institutions joining the many amateur family history
researchers around the world who all communicated, and who
still comunicate with one another, through the pages of The
Indiaman Magazine.
In 1998, the decision was taken to fold
the Society but to continue with the production of The Indiaman
Magazine. From day one, with members in a multitude of countries
The Indiaman Magazine was seen to be of greater service to
the membership than the Society was itself. The magazine was
the vessel that united the members, and today, the magazine
continues to provide the same helpful and friendly service
that it did when it was the journal of the Society. Today,
readers of The Indiaman Magazine can be found in 25 countries
around the world.
Readership
The majority of our readers are descendants
of the Europeans, Indians and Anglo-Indians who lived and
died in India initially serving the Honourable East India
Company, the British Army and in some instances the Dutch
and French East India Companies, up to the days of the British
Raj and Indian Independence. |
